Keir Starmer is facing an uphill battle as GB News revealed that more illegal migrants are crossing the English Channel on Saturday (May 30). Charlie Peters and Olivia Utley shared the breaking update with viewers and were joined by Human Rights Lawyer Shoain Khan, who questioned whether the government actually wants to stop the boats.

“I’m not sure what the government is doing and I think that’s the problem. We have lots of slogans from this government and the previous ones, but do they even want to stop the boats?” he remarked. “We have an idea on what kind of policies work and what don’t, but they seem to be repeating the same things.

Khan argued that the government’s solution to the problem is to send more money to the French and “hope they do something about it”.

He added: “We can be doing lots more. I don’t think they even have the will. It’s not just about they don’t know what to do.”

Peters pointed out that the government has not introduced a deportation scheme, but has agreed another deal with France which has meant the small boats are being launched from further away to avoid French authorities.

“We’re being told that one of the two small boats that arrived yesterday launched from a beach near the French ports of Dieppe. That’s 100 miles from the beaches around Dunkirk where these crossings normally happened,” the presenter said, before pressing Khan on whether traffickers will always continue trying because of the opportunities they will receive once they get into British waters.
Khan agreed: “I don’t think there’s any doubt about that. I’m not sure the government even knows what France is doing. They think we have lots of taxpayers money, throw it at France and hopefully they deal with it.”

He claimed these new routes are putting migrants’ lives at risk because the journey is ultimately more dangerous.

Khan added: “There are lots of things that the government can be doing but clearly they don’t have the will. The government is much more concerned about how the policies come across to the public rather than actually doing something that’s going to make a difference.”
