A new rule has slipped in for petrol drivers but it lands like a personal bill when you realise who it hits.

HMRC has confirmed a 14p rule for drivers which comes in from this week. HMRC has confirmed fuel advisory rates for petrol, diesel and EV motorists on Monday, June 1, after a quarterly update kicked in.

These rates only apply to employees using a company car. HMRC reviews rates quarterly on March 1 and June 1, as well as September 1 and December 1. The ‘rates per mile’ calculated in these tables are shown rounded to one decimal place, but the final advisory fuel rates are rounded to the nearest whole penny. Rates per mile which end in 0.5 are rounded down to the nearest whole penny for the advisory fuel rate when the underlying unrounded figure ends in a number less than 0.5 (for example 0.487). When the underlying unrounded figure ends in a number greater than 0.5 (for example 0.513) it is rounded up to the nearest whole penny.

The latest petrol and diesel prices are taken from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and the LPG (UK average) is from the Automobile Association website.

From June 1, motorists with petrol tanks which are sized 1400cc or less face a 14p per mile rate, while LPG drivers face an 11p per mile rate.

Drivers in 1401cc to 2000cc petrol tanks have a 17p per mile rate, with LPGs the same size on a 13p per mile rate.

This is increased to 26p and 21p respectively for motorists in petrol and LPG tanks above 2000cc.

The diesel rates are similar, with 15p per mile, 17p per mile and 23p per mile rates set for tanks sized 1600cc or less, 1601cc to 2000cc and over 2000cc respectively.

Electric chargepoint rates for home chargers are 7p per mile – but this is upgraded to 15p per mile for public chargepoints.
