BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty shut down Secretary of State for Business and Trade Peter Kyle in a tense showdown on the morning show. Naga started off the debate by asking his thoughts on John Healey and Al Carns’ resignations as Defence Secretary and Armed Forces Minister yesterday in a row over the government’s defence investment plan.
Kyle admitted he was upset about the exits, but insisted that the government had been working hard on a plan to boost the British economy and defence, ending with saying: “When you see the plan, I think you’ll see we put a lot of time and effort into getting it right.” Naga asked: “When did you see the plan?” A red-faced Kyle responded: “I’ve not seen all of the plan but I am assured, and I am doing my bit as a department to make sure to benefit the British economy…”

Naga jumped in to say: “Just on that point, so you haven’t seen the plan, but you’re sure that when I see the plan, I’ll recognise that this government is getting it right. Do you know if John Healey and Al Carns saw the plan?”
Kyle laughed and replied: “Of course, they have been working very closely with the PM for a considerable amount of time.”
Naga asked: “So they’ve seen the plan, and yet they resigned… please let me finish my point. They saw the plan, they weren’t happy, they’ve resigned. You haven’t seen the plan, you’re happy. Why do you think they resigned?”
Kyle insisted he had faith in the Prime Minister, but stunned viewers rushed to social media to praise Naga for her savvy takedown as the minister stumbled over his words.
One said: “Naga isnt in the mood for messing around this morning,” as another agreed: “Naga is consistent in calling out BS irrespective of which party mouthpiece is on.”
A third joked: “Naga is on one today…” as a fourth raged: “The stupid @peterkyle needs to go back to ‘Business School of Lying’ AND learn how to tell fibs and talk gobbledegook.”
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC1.
