BBC Breakfast issued a major update ahead of Trooping the Colour later on Saturday, June 13, and it could be bad news for the royals. The celebration of the King‘s official birthday is taking place at Buckingham Palace and Horse Guards, with huge crowds expected to arrive. The military will be doing a parade in Charles’ honour, and there will be a RAF flyover to finish off the occasion.

However, BBC Breakfast’s royal correspondent Sarah Campbell, reporting live from outside the palace, had some worrying news. Presenter Naga Munchetty said to her: “The sun looks glorious reflecting off the palace today. This is an important day in the royal calendar.”

Sarah replied: “We’re really pleased the weather is looking good, it hasn’t been over the last few days. You’re right, this is one of those rare occasions where the royal family will come together for an official moment. So a little later this morning, the King and the senior royals will go to Horse Guards and watch the parade there.”

She continued: “It has been a turbulent year for the royals; there have been questions over properties and money, and of course, Andrew’s scandal continues. He won’t be here today; he hasn’t been to Trooping the Colours for many years.”

In bad news for the royals, Sarah confirmed they were expecting the anti-monarchy group Republic to set up protests this year, as they had become a regular fixture during the event.

She continued: “It has also been a turbulent week for the defence forces, the new sec Dan Jarvis is expected to take his seat, and there have been questions over their readiness, well this is a real public way for the forces to show their precision and poise in front of the King and the new defence secretary.”

She added that the family will return to the palace for their famous annual picture on the balcony, with Prince William, Princess Kate and their three children attending.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC1.
