Keir Starmer to visit Golders Green ‘as soon as possible’ as he issues statement following emergency Cobra meeting
Sir Keir Starmer said he would visit Golders Green “as soon as possible” following the “appalling attack” on two Jewish men.
The Prime Minister’s comments come after an emergency Cobra meeting this afternoon, which was attended by senior members of the Metropolitan Police, the mayor of London, and cabinet ministers.
Speaking after, he said: “Let me start by saying what an appalling attack this is.
“And my thoughts and all of our thoughts are with the victims, their families, their loved ones.”
He added: “Let’s be frank, this is not an isolated incident. There have been a series of antisemitic attacks, and I know firsthand the anxiety that is causing in the community, and concern. I was at Kenton Synagogue last week where I heard a lot about that level of anxiety. It’ll be worse after today.
“We’re very much in touch with the community, and I’ll visit as soon as possible. I’ve just held a Cobra meeting, bringing together all the relevant partners, including the Home Secretary, the London Mayor, the Metropolitan (Police) commissioner, to co-ordinate our response and to look at enhanced security.
“I’ve also spoken to CST. There is enhanced funding already in place. We need to increase that to give the level of protection that is needed.
“We need to take measures to deal with malign state actors, but we also have to be really clear that we need to get to the root causes of extremism and antisemitism, and so that is what we’re doing.”

The Prime Minister added: “The Government is taking action in relation to security, cohesion, extremism, but of course it’s our responsibility to coordinate the immediate response here to this appalling attack, to ensure security is in place, to take other measures.
“I’m holding a meeting tomorrow with the criminal justice agencies to make sure that we have effective and swift justice in these cases.
“But we do have to recognise the levels of anxiety and concern there are, that I know about in terms of the Jewish community feeling very much exposed and vulnerable, feeling they’ve got to hide their identity, sometimes in the health service, sometimes at school, on the streets where they live.
“It’s our job to make sure that they feel safe and secure. It’s our job to make sure that we absolutely deal with the roots of antisemitism and extremism. That is what we will do.”
Sir Keir Starmer has called a Cobra meeting following the stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green
Speaking at the scene earlier, courts minister and local MP Sarah Sackman said: “I want to say this to everybody listening and specifically to the British Jewish community and attack on Britain’s Jews is an attack on Britain itself.
“We cannot tolerate this.
“The Prime Minister has called a Cobra meeting.
“It speaks to just how serious this incident is.”
She added: “What we need to see is solidarity… from our allies everywhere. This isn’t a fight for just the police, for just the Government, for just the Jewish community.
“It is a fight that we need to have society-wide, to stand up to antisemitism, so that we do not see these signs of hate on our streets anymore. We need to hear from the moderate majority who want to root this sort of hate out.”
The MP was met with heckles from locals during her speech, with chants of “shame on you” by the crowds.
Officers were first called to Highfield Avenue at 11.16am to reports of a stabbing in Highfield Road, Golders Green.

Sir Keir Starmer spoke in the Commons earlier today on the incident in Golders Green, describing it as “deeply concerning”.
He said: “There is now a police investigation and I think we all need to do everything we can to support that investigation and be absolutely clear in our determination to deal with any of these offences, the like of which we have seen too much recently.”
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: “This is yet another appalling antisemitic attack. The Jewish community are not being properly protected from this hate.
“We have seen Iran sponsoring antisemitic attacks and Islamist extremism run rampant. The Government must urgently step up tangible actions against antisemitism, Iran and Islamist extremism.”
At the police cordon in Golders Green, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch said: “There are terrorists and violent people who are seeking out visibly Jewish people.
“This is a national emergency.
“It is time to ban these marches, they were initially about a war in the Middle East, but now it’s quite clear they are used as a cover for violence and intimidation against Jews.”
